Brief biography of Clara Campoamor (Madrid, February 12, 1888 – Lausanne, April 30, 1972).

Politician, defender of women's rights and main promoter of universal suffrage in Spain. She was born into a humble family, studied law at the same time she worked, and graduated from the University of Madrid in 1924. While she was working as a lawyer, her political concerns led her to become closer to the socialists. and to found a University Women's Association. With the advent of the Second Republic (1931), she obtained a seat as a deputy for Madrid on the lists of the Radical Party. She was part of the Constitutional Commission, standing out in the discussion that led to the approval of article 36, which recognized for the first time the right to vote for women. She also founded an organization called the Women's Republican Union. She did not manage to renew her representative status in the 1933 elections. And she left Spain in 1938, faced with the imminent victory of the reactionary military uprising; The subsequent Franco regime did not allow her to return to the country, so she remained in exile, first in Argentina, and, from 1955 until her death, in Switzerland.
